ESCAPE 2010 Highlights

WHEN: April 30 – 2 May 2010

WHERE: Philmont Training Center, located approximately 4 miles South of Cimarron, New Mexico.

Philmont Boy Scout Ranch

Thirty-one volunteer teams from New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas brought 163 SAR volunteers to ESCAPE 2010. The event, designed to educate and sometimes certify New Mexico Search and Council (NMSARC) team members, featured 54 classes and seminars on topics ranging from high angle litter evacuation to on-site incident planning and basic-to-advanced radio communications.

Keynote speaker Robert Koester presented an analysis of lost person behavior as “the cornerstone of search and rescue efforts.” Koestner has created a database of 50,000 lost person incidents to determine patterns of probable behavior based on age, gender, and 39 other subject categories. For more information on Robert and his book, please click here.

The event was hosted by Philmont Boy Scout Ranch near Cimarron. According to 2011 ESCAPE coordinator John Gallegos of Organ Mountain Search and Rescue, next year’s event will occur May 13-15 at the Ruidoso Convention Center. Click here for more information on ESCAPE 2011.
