Subject:  Male hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject went for a hike starting near the Winsor Trail near the Santa Fe Ski Area.  Before IB was set up the subject had walked out to Tesuque area and was getting a ride.

Subject:  Male on snowshoes

Mission Summary:  Subject went for a hike on the Borrego Trail loop but took a wrong turn.  He called a friend and reported that he was lost.  When the ground team found him he was wet and hypothermic.  The team got him into dry clothes and gave him warm drinks then walked him back to IB.

Mission Summary:  Subjects took the Millennium lift to the top of SF Ski area with the intention of snowboarding the Big Tesuque, wrong turn and ended up in the SF Watershed where they spent one night.  Hiked out and called 911.  Due to the weather, aircraft could not be used.  NM National Guard located them on 18/08 and hosted them out of their location.

Subject:  Male motorcyclist

Mission Summary:  Subject went for a ride on his motorcycle in the Caja del Rio area and became lost.  Got Phase 2 gps info from subject’s mobile phone.  Two 4WD vehicles responded to drive to his location.  Subject was retrieved and returned to his residence.

Location:  Pipeline Road near Los Alamos, NM

Subject:  Male hiker

Teams Responding:  Mountain Canine Corp, NNM Sno-Breakers

Mission Summary:  Subject left the Pajarito trailhead in Rendija Canyon with plans to follow the trail west of Los Alamos to Pipeline Road.  He ran into deep snow and became disoriented – found Pipeline Rd and regained his bearings.  His wife intercepted him there and because of darkness they decided to request assistance.  LA PD received the call and asked for SAR help.  SAR team met the couple with food and water as they were returning to IB.

Subject:  Three teenage boys

Mission Summary:  Subjects drove their car into the canyon and got it stuck.  They started to hike out but got lost.  Finally used their cell phone to call LAPD and they got their coordinates.  Two members of MCC hiked to the location and brought the boys out.

Mission Summary:  Subject was reported to be suicidal when mission number was issued.  State Police locate his vehicle and found the man deceased.

Subject:  Two female hikers

Mission Summary:  The subjects went for a short hike and got lost.  Called 911 on their cell phone but coordinates were hopelessly off.  They were located near where they were camped.

Location:  USFS Trail 271, Pecos District, Santa Fe National Forest

Subject:  Male hiker

Teams Responding:  Atalaya SAR

Mission Summary:  Subject reportedly had broken arm, was immobile and later reported as unresponsive and requiring rescue.  Pecos Med2 hiked into the subject and reported subject did not need airlifting, then Pecos EMS requested air evacuation.  Med2 evacuated subject on foot, subject refused care and was taken to the hospital by POV.

Mission Summary:  Subject reported missing from home at about 5:30.  Mission activated ASAP due to reported condition of subject.  He was located in good condition before teams were deployed

Subject:  A male and female hiker

Mission Summary:  Subjects were confused as to direction to car.  GPS information from cell phone was used to locate them.  They were instructed where to walk and a Game & Fish Officer hiked in and found them.

Location:  East of Pecos, NM

Subject:  Target Shooter

Teams Responding:  Atalaya SAR, Mountain Canine Corp, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Posse, Santa Fe SAR

Mission Summary:  The subject and his friend went out target shooting.  The subject’s dog bolted at the first shot and the subject went after it.  He became lost but had found his dog.  The two men had intermittent contact by cell phone.  SAR was activated the next day and the RP reported that the subject had burned his pants to stay warm overnight.  Rains had made the roads impassable for vehicles so NM SP 606 searched but was unable to locate the subject.  He was picked up about 7 miles SSW of the PLS.  He was cold and hungry but otherwise well.

Mission Summary:  NMSP Pecos was contacted regarding a 61 year old hunter overdue by about 15 hours.  Mission was initiated due to subject’s age and rainy weather conditions.  4 x 4’s dispatched to run the roads in the area.  Subject was located by IC at intersection of FR 202 and FR 86.  He was in good condition.

Location:  Santa Fe Ski Area

Subject:  16 year old hiker

Teams Responding:  Atalaya SAR, Alb. Mountain Rescue, Cibola SAR, Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club, Mtn. Canine Corp, Santa Fe SAR

Mission Summary:  Subject left his group to hike to the top of the ski area.  When he returned to the parking lot, everyone was gone so he hitched a ride to the group home.  Due to a lack of communication and investigation, a search was initiated and called off when IC was informed that subject was safe at home.

Location:  Rowe Mesa south of I-25

Subject:  Male

Teams Responding:  None

Mission Summary:  Subject called 911 and reported he was lost on Rowe Mesa but that he could see a radio tower, that he had a migraine headache and needed to be rescued.  He seemed to be very confused and could not give any details of how he got to his location or contact information.  NMSP 606 searched with FLIR but could not locate the subject.  His cell phone either was turned off or had a low battery.  The search was suspended due to lack of further information or contact.

Location:  Rowe Mesa

Subject:  Female piñon picker and two children

Mission Summary:  Subjects left their family camp to pick piñons and got lost.  The subject called 911.  FC obtained coordinates from dispatch.  The FC drove to a point near the coordinates and met family members.  They all walked toward the location of the subjects and found them in good health and returned them to the vehicles.

Mission Summary:  Subject was out with his horse for a 5 day elk hunt. He was overdue on the 5th day and his brothers became concerned because his horse is very green and the terrain in the area is steep and rough.  The subject is very experienced and familiar with the area.  The subjects brothers located him at daybreak on 10/19/08.

Mission Summary:  Subject was upset at news from home.  She ran away from the school unprepared for cold temperatures.  She returned on her own before SAR responders could be mobilized.

Location:  Gascon Trail to Camp Davis, NM

Subject:  Three hikers

Teams Responding:  San Miguel SAR

Mission Summary:  Subjects were hiking up Gascon Trail when two of them stopped at rocky overlook and one continue to the top.  After 15-20 minutes the two decided to continue to the summit.  The two failed to make contact with the other hiker.  Before SAR resources started up the trail, all the hikers were accounted for.

Subject:  Female Climber

Mission Summary:  Lady from Arkansas and her husband’s uncle climbed Starvation Peak.  When they started back the woman had a panic attack.  Her companion got her back to the top and the husband called for help.  Before responders started up, the husband and uncle got her down using ropes.

Mission Summary:  Subject was quail hunting with his dog.  The dog ran ahead and the subject went to look for the dog and got lost.  Subject was found by a rancher, the dog was found the following day.  The subject was tired but in good condition after spending two nights out in sub-freezing temperatures without cold weather gear.

Mission Summary:  Hiker decided to climb a cliff face and got stranded half way up.  SAR responders brought him down.

Subject:  Male hiker

Teams Responding:  Doña Ana County SAR, Organ Mtn. Rescue Squad

Mission Summary:  Subject was hiking with the Reporting Party on the Filmore Canyon Trail near Dripping Springs Recreational Area.  At around 15:30 he attempted to climb up a side waterfall area, slipped and slid down the waterfall injuring his left ankle. The RP hiked out of the Canyon, called subject’s father and State Police.  SAR volunteers made contact with subject and transported him to IB via litter where he refused ambulance transport and had his father transport him.

Mission Summary:   The subject broke his ankle while hiking with a companion.  Due to his location it was necessary to evacuate him by helicopter and transport to a local hospital.

Mission Summary:  Hikers were hiking Modoc Mine Trail, one suffered from dehydration and heat exhaustion.  They called 911 requesting assistance.

Subject:  Male resident of Las Cruces

Mission Summary:  Subject walked away from home after having an argument with his spouse.  He made no effort to contact friends of family. He walked to town and rented a motel room for the duration.  Subject was spotted by a church group member while driving by the subject’s location.  He refuse to return home and after being checked by a nurse, found to be in excellent condition and released on his own free will.

Mission Summary:  Subject known to be schizophrenic and off meds, walked away from work at 21:00.  He met family members on the morning of 9/11/08.  IC followed family member to PLS on 2/13/08 and spotted subject walking on roadside in Hatch.  Picked him up and returned him to his family.

Mission Summary:  Group went for a hike and it got dark before they returned.  Two of the subjects have diabetes and one had gone into insulin shock.  Border Patrol helicopter brought that subject out and took her to Mountain View Hospital.  The remainder of the group was brought out by ground teams.

Mission Summary:  Subject and the RP were hiking, when they started down the subject fell and slid about 10 feet.  She sustained a head laceration w/ possible head trauma.  RP party called 911.  Teams with AMR personnel evacuated the subject from the area to an ambulance.

Mission Summary:  Subject took new ATV for check out, ventured into the Rio Puerco area and got lost.  He called his family to report his situation when the cell phone died.  Subject was located unharmed.

Subject:  Five year old boy

Mission Summary:  Torrence County S requested assistance in search for 5 year old boy.  Initial search of home by SO did not find him, but second search conducted by SO and State Police located the boy under his bed just as FC arrived at IB.

Subject:  2 male hikers

Mission Summary:  Subject hiked from Whitewash Trailhead intending to visit South Peak and then proceed north to the Tram but became stuck in waist-deep snow.  They had a GPS and reported their position and after that the GPS stopped working.  Subject self-evacuated and came out just north of base at Bear Canyon where they were picked up by SAR team members.

Mission Summary:  Subjects hike the La Luz Trail from the bottom, got stuck near “Y” in trail and called 911.  SAR contacted subjects and they said they would push on to the top.  Got a call at 18:25 that both were okay and on a tram car down.

Mission Summary:  1 adult female & 5 minor females went on a day hike up Embudo Trail planning to hike to Oso Pass and return.  Group went off trail and became lost.  They were rescued by SAR teams.

Mission Summary:  Subject went hiking in the Cabezon Peak area in the Ojito Wilderness area on 4/9/08.  He became disoriented during the afternoon and between 1600 & 1800 hrs he called a family member to tell them he was lost.  Teams searched until approx 1800 hrs on 4/10/2008 when the subject walked out to Hwy 550

Mission Summary:  Subject left vehicle at Tunnel Springs trailhead for a few hour loop hike.  Started at 09:00, got lost and called 911 @ 15:00 hr and reached Sandoval County SP.  Subject was found safe, checked by RMT, given water and walked out.

Subject:  Male hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject left home and thought to be headed to San Antonio Hot Springs.  His mother called LCVFD at 02:00 and asked for help in locating subject.  When IC was activated he learned that subject had left the hot springs to return home.  Subject got turned around at one point but found the right trail and was headed home.  He was in good condition and had no problems

Mission Summary:  Subject experiencing chest pains.  Deployed teams to contact, assess, stabilize, package for helicopter transport.  Helicopter transported subject to St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe.

Mission Summary:  NMSP notified of Sandoval County response to report of hiker that had fallen from 100 ft. cliff near Rio Puerco Mine.  Deputies with reporting party located subject & evacuated via Careflight.  NMSP & volunteers never used

Subject:  29 y/o female hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject severely sprained her ankle while hiking with her husband and children.  Called for help on a cell phone and BC FD responded and called SAR.  BC FD walked the subject out and SAR teams littered her to a POV.  She was taken to urgent care.

Location:  Rozamieto Canyon, Sandia Mountains

Subject:  Male hiker

Mission Summary:  5 male hikers went out on the La Luz Spur from the Tram parking lot ignoring the USFS “closed trail and trail tape”.  They got off the trail at Rozamieto Canyon and began a steep climb.  About one mile up the subject began having chest pains radiating into his neck and arm.  BCFD and AMRC reached the subject and agreed that an air evac was necessary.  NMNG responded, lifted the subject out and transported him to a location where an ambulance could pick him up and transport him to UNMH.

Mission Summary:  Female hiker reported dehydrated, vomiting and weak and could not continue down the trail.  BCFD & SAR teams located, assessed, treated and escorted pair down the trail.

Mission Summary:  Subject went for short hike with a companion.  The companion made it back to the vehicle.  Subject was picked up by a passerby on Tramway Blvd.

Mission Summary:  Father and son were off roading in the Rio Puerco Valley when they high centered their vehicle.  They called 911 on a cell phone and reported they had no idea where they were.  911 was unable to get their coordinates.  Teams on ATV and 4WD teams were sent into the area and located the subjects.  Their vehicle was pulled free and they returned to IB

Mission Summary:  Subjects were hiking from Pino Trail to upper Crest, became lost at dark.  They were located at Crest Trail & Tree Spring junction by APD-SAR.

Mission Summary:  BCFD responded to subjects, lost contact with them and requested SAR assistance.  The subjects were located by BCFD before SAR resources were deployed.

Location:  Crest Trail about 1 mile south of the Tram

Subject:  Male hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject walked up Pino trail, got to Crest trail, walked on Crest trail, had lunch and water.  When he got up to hike he fell and sprained his ankle.  BCSO located him and SAR EMT evaluated subject, walked to tram.  BCSO transported subject from Tram to his vehicle.

Location:  Trail from Jemez Falls to Battle Ship Rock

Subject:  2 Girl Scout Leaders with 6 Girl Scouts

Mission Summary:  The leaders took 6 girl scouts out on a hike from Jemez Falls to Battle Ship Rock.  They had parked a van at Battle Ship Rock to get the group back to Jemez Falls where they were camped.  There are several trails in this area, but all end up at the same place but the people id not know this and spent several hours backtracking and darkness came on.  Teams were sent down the trail and up the trail from Battle Ship and located the subjects a short time later and walked them out.

Subject:  Man and woman hikers

Mission Summary:  Subjects started up Ojo del Norte trail at about 14:30, hiked about 2 ½ hrs. and discovered they were lost.  Called 911 at 17:15 and got Sandoval Co SO, they got the coordinates and transferred the call to NMSP.  Subjects were found safe and well.

Mission Summary:  The subject and another hunter were dropped off at the top of a ridge at approx. 14:30 on 11/1/08 to hunt downhill towards a cabin.  The subject is familiar with the area and the hike takes about 1 ½ hrs.  Hunting partner arrived back at the cabin in about an hour.  The RP and another hunter waited until dark and started looking for subject.  They searched most of the night then called in friends and the Sandoval SO.  State Police were called around 9:30 on 11/2/08 and SAR teams were activated.
