Subject: Male snowboarder
Teams Responding: Albuq. Mtn. Rescue, Atalaya SAR, Cibola SAR, La Cueva VFD, Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club, Los Alamos Aux. Fire Dept., Los Alamos Ski Patrol & K-9, K-9SAR, Mountain Canine Corp., Santa Fe SAR, Taos SAR
Mission Summary: Two snowboarders making last run of the day became separated. The subject got off the ski run into the trees and went out of bounds. RP contacted the ski patrol and they made an initial search within the ski are boundaries without success. State Police were then notified and a search was initiated. SP 606 searched area adjacent to the ski area but had to suspend due to poor visibility. NM National Guard helicopter searched with night vision equipment of 1/5/09 and subject was able to signal them with his Ipod. He was lifted out and taken to the hospital with no lasting injuries.

Mission Summary: Called for lost hiker in White Rock Canyon. Interviews suggested subject might be suicidal. Ground teams were sent in to sweep trails before dog team could arrive. Subject was located in good shape and hiked out with the team.

Mission Summary: Subject went out for afternoon snowshoe trip up Raven's Ridge. Got lost, spent night out in woods. Texted friends who reported her lost. Mission initiated and ground teams found her north of Aspen Ranch, unharmed and healthy. Walked out with team.

Mission Summary: Mission started for hysterical mother and 3 y/o child lost off Ski Basin Road. As mission evolved, subjects were found and brought by a friend of the family. After interviewing the friend it was determined that subjects were actually located about 10.5 miles above Canada de los Alamos off Old Las Vegas Hwy. and that there were two additional subjects out there. Redeployed teams to Canada in time for second set of subjects to call in to SP and inform them that they were at home.

Mission Summary: Female subject lost in the vicinity of Lake Katherine, called for help. NMSP helicopter 606 deployed to search for subject, picked her up and departed. Helicopter crashed after take off. SP Officer was found trying to hike to safety and the other two subjects were found deceased.

Mission Summary: Subject left his vehicle in Los Alamos at approx 15:00 for a dayhike down Bayo Canyon. At about 19:30 he called 911 and reported that he was lost and it was beginning to get dark. LA County FD looked for him near coordinates derived from his cell phone call but were unable to locate him. He continued to hike down the canyon and called twice more on his cell phone. Teams responded and tracked him down the canyon to where he was found in good condition at about 3:00 on 6/19. Subject was in good condition and walked out to the highway with search teams.

Mission Summary: Subject was distributing feed / salt to locations on Elk Mountain with 2 other people when he became separated. He went off the road on his ATV and ended up hiking out to the east. He called home the next morning and said he was heading home.

Mission Summary: Male hiker reported lost by hunting buddies on SundayPM/MondayAM. Subject’s vehicle was parked at his camp and contained all his clothes and gear except a bow and pistol. Scent dogs tracked him down a trail and back to vehicle, they alerted to smell on last two operational periods but nothing came of these. Eight OP were held over a month’s time, subject was not located and mission has been closed.

Mission Summary: Subject left mother's house in Queen, NM on dirt bike to meet cousin near National Livestock Ranch on 4/19/09. He did not arrive at destination. Subject's family called 911, who dispatched Eddy County SO. SO turned the case over to NMSP on 4/21/09. Field Coordinator assigned at 8:30 on 4/21/09. Subject returned home at approx. 9:00 on 4/21 and reported he had been lost.

Mission Summary: 23 hikers lost Forest Trail 525 when hiking from Queen to Sitting Bull Falls. None were prepared for an overnight stay as most were wearing swim suits and sneakers. They had gotten off the mail trail and followed a woodcutting road / fire line into Gilson canyon. All were found uninjured.

Mission Summary: Subjects left home around 17:30 on 2/15/09 but were not back home after sundown. Family and neighbors searched until around 12:00 am when DA Sheriff’s Office was called. SAR mission was initiated after DACSO was unable to locate boys. Searchers entered field around 4:32 and located subjects at 5:02. Subjects had stopped because they could not see where they were going and build a fire to keep warm. EMS determined that both subjects were slightly hypothermic and they were release to their parents by EMS.

Mission Summary: Alzheimer's subject walked away from Golden Mesa Assisted Living Facility on 7/3/09 after being dropped off by his family at 18:30 hrs. Area around facility was searched with ATVs and ground teams searched adjacent businesses, parks and construction areas. IC was notified that bus driver was 99% sure that she picked up subject and dropped him off around Farleys. Ground teams were sent to area and included Mesilla Valley Mall. Hospitals and businesses were notified and searched as well. Teams searched all assigned areas to at least an 80% POD. Mission suspended until further evidence is discovered.

Mission Summary: Father and son started hiking at around 8:00 hrs. They became lost and ran out of water and contacted family for help. The family contacted 911 around 18:00, State Police were notified about 20:30 hrs. Attemps were made to located subjects by 911 cell phone call, to determine location - both unsuccessful. Search teams dispatched into probable area where subjects were located and given aid.

It was unlikely he could have loaded the gun or that it would fire due to the high humidity. Subject called home and told his wife he was at a motel on Picacho St. Officers went to the room and determined the subject was safe and coherent.

Mission Summary: Subject was on a group hike from a senior citizens center when he collapsed at about 11:30. Members of the group attempted CPR for an undetermined length of time. Dona Ana Fire Service responded to 911 call and were on scene at IB by 11:39. Medics from DAFS determined the subject was deceased and began extraction. Responding teams assisted with the recovery.

Mission Summary: Subjects hiked to San Antonio Hot Springs from Thompson Ridge. About 1 mile in, subject 3 was getting cold and wet feet, subject 1 gave her his boots and proceeded in his socks. At the hot springs subject 1’s feet began turning blue so subject 3 walked out to get help. Subject 2 walked out later with #1’s flashlight. Snowmobiles were sent in to rescue #1. He was found to be in good health.

SO located subjects around 23:00 but were unable to access. A ground team was sent it to stabilize the subjects and walk them out.

They called 911 and teams were sent to location. Subjects were rehydrated & fed then walked out to Sandia Reservation where they were met by APD & transported back to IB. They were checked out and signed releases.

Sandoval County Fire assessed subject and contacted National Guard for helicopter assistance. AMRC walked uninjured subject and fire fighters out of the field. Injured subject was airlifted out by helo.

Mission Summary: Subject was climbing the peak and fell about 40 feet. He had possibly broken both legs and had internal injuries making ground evacuation questionable. National Guard helicopter lifted subject out and transported him to hospital.

The family looked for about ½ hour before reporting to Park staff who in turn contacted Torrance County SO. Subject was found by Park staff and parents and mission was terminated when he was found to be in good condition.

This trail most closely matched the subject’s description of their activities. One subject found to have aggravated a previous back injury and unable to walk out. This subject was littered to base.

Mission Summary: The subject left the La Cienega Trailhead for a day hike on Cienega Canyon and Faulty Trails and intended to return to the trailhead. She got off the trail and got lost. She called her husband on her cell phone and he called 911. Dispatch was able to contact her on her cell phone and obtained the coordinates and a search was initiated. A hasty ground team hiked to her location and walked her out to a road where they were picked up and returned to IB.

IC plotted this point and told TCSO where it was referenced to street names and the subject's home. Subject was located near the reported location by County Sheriff units just as The IC arrived at subject's home.

Subject had hiked from Upper Tram Terminal to Visitor Center by upper parking lot on crest then hiked to Kiwanis Cabin. He twisted an ankle and needed help. Subject then walked out with passer-by, caught the tram down and departed w/o contacting IB. IC confirmed subject's vehicle was gone.

Mission Summary: The subjects attempted to hike from the Crest down S. Crest Trail to Tijeras, NM. When darkness fell they became confused and called 911. BCSO started toward the location then called NMSP for assistance. Before teams reached the subjects, BCSO advised they had reached the subjects and were taking full responsibility for bringing them off the mountain.

Mission Summary: Subject described as non verbal, very shy & likes coffee walked away from group home around 14:00. Gallup PD, FD and McKinley County SO drove around looking for him until about 22:00. Mission was opened after interview with home staff. Dispatch used reverse 911 and a teen found the subject wandering in the Church parking lot and took him back to the home.

Subject has missed the trail turning to the south at "Thirty-two Tank" 12S07681117 x 3664888 where there is a lot of intersecting tracks and trails. Using his compass the subject worked his way South and was between Railroad Canyon and the trail. At times the subject was 100 feet off and below the trail. Subject walked out at smaller canyon 12S0769187 x 3657713 between the trail 96 and entrance to Rocky Canyon.

He determined that he had to hike west to the highway so decided to start hiking cross country to the road. Last message was sent at 17:31 where he set up camp for the night. Their vehicle could not be located on 5/17/09, it was found by USFS LEO at Rocky Canyon Campground. Subjects hiked along trail #700, when they came to the trail they left the trail and headed west to try and find Indian ruins. They could not locate the trail and tied to find their way out. On Monday 5/18/09, subject #2 left to fill water bottles from spring and was not able to find his way back to subject #1. Subject #2 was located by BP helo and evacuated to Gila Regional Medical Center. Subject #1 was found and hiked out with search team. NMSP officer transported him back to town

The subject's employer, from the Wellness Coalition, called and informed the IC that the subject had tested the device at the office before going on trail with work crew. Resources were canceled.

Further investigation did not turn anything up and the signals disappeared. The mission was suspended at 16:18 due to lack of ELT signal.
