ESCAPE 2018 - Highlights

ESCAPE 2018 - Highlights

WE BROKE A RECORD WITH OVER 230 IN ATTENDANCE THIS YEAR!
ESCAPE 2018 was held at the Philmont Scout Ranch from April 26-29, 2018.  Volunteers from 33 New Mexico teams attended this year’s event either as participants or instructors or both!  We had 35 instructors help us sharpen our SAR skills and learn new ones over the three-day event. And there were a number of guests from other SAR-related organizations, too!   We had 3 out-of-state nationally recognized K9 instructors and guest speaker Chris Young from the Bay Area informing us on new SAR technology and investigative techniques.

We had classes covering the full spectrum of SAR, from techniques for search, to technical rope rescue, medical, communications, new intelligence gathering, working with horse and dog teams, and more, all in the setting of the beautiful Philmont Scout Ranch which was extremely conducive for camaraderie.  We offered 76 courses, including 15 that provided medical continuing education units (CEUs) and 7 that provided state continuing education certification credits.  Four participants passed their HAM license exam, 34 passed the Field Certification exam, and 18 participants attended the Safety Officer course for the first time. Congratulations to all.

Our vendors Rescue Tactics and Training and SARSHOP had a plethora of SAR related courses and gear available for purchase.  Did you miss them?  NO worries, click on their names to visit their website!  Thanks Dan Barela and Susie Semplesz for joining us!
During the General Meeting:
  • The 2018 Ralph Dawdy Memorial Award was presented to Larry Zentner of  Civil Air Patrol and NM SAR Support Team in recognition of his many contributions to SAR statewide.
  • We heard reports from NMSARC committees.
  • Recognition was given to Terry Morton  (2015-2018) and Grant Reigelman (2017-2018) for their services on the council.
  • We recognized our fallen hero's:   Larry Hartman (Founder and First President of Luna County SAR) and K-9 Clancy (Handler Joan Rogers, Mountain Canine Corps).
  • Bob Rodgers gave a presentation on the  state's continuing education system.
